The TR community and industry education department now offer a civil rights and civil liberties course.
The six-week course and weekend class will be free with books included.
TR government instructor Corena White will teach the class, which starts Feb. 2.
White said the class will study the cultural and political conflicts from different time periods in American history.
Week one will focus on indigenous people of the Americas and their struggles with European settlers.
The founding of the U.S. will be week two’s topics including the original 13 colonies and the American Revolution.
Black American civil rights is the third week’s discourse including slavery, post war reconstruction, Jim Crow Laws and the civil rights era of the 1950’s and 1960’s.
The fourth week shifts to women’s civil rights and the trials and tribulations women had to go through in history.
And Latino/a/x civil rights will shed light on the Latino progression in the fifth week of the class.
Freedom of press will be the discussion of the last class, and students will analyze free press and who owns the media.
White hopes the students will learn the difference between civil rights and civil liberties.
Civil rights are he basic right to be free from unequal treatment based on characteristics, and civil liberties are basic freedoms guaranteed under the Bill of Rights.
“I hope students will have a better understanding of each struggle I’m talking about,” she said.
Students can RSVP at TR community and industry education services at tr.cie@tccd.edu or 817-515-1071.
