The sound of cheers and the feel of spring was in the air April 12 on SE Campus as students gave it their all on the fitness obstacle course.

Many students came out to get their fitness on as men and women took turns racing two at a time around the course.

The beginning obstacle consisted of running back and forth between a bucket full of water and a cup trying to fill the cup with water using a splash ball. Next, students ran forward and backward around boxes on their way to running around a cone carrying either a medicine ball or a big PVC pipe.

After finishing that, students weaved in and out of poles, jumped over stacked boxes, hopped side-to-side over mini-hurdles and rolled a heavy medicine ball around a cone and back. The home stretch involved students doing pushups on a dome-shaped Bosu ball, running across a wooden plank and doing jumping jacks through an agility ladder before sprinting to the finish.

Many of the competitors were exhausted halfway through the course, but they gutted it out and finished. SE student Louise Olivares was surprised at how difficult the course was.

“[The obstacle course] was intense,” she said. “Going back and forth, it takes a lot of energy. I didn’t think I was going to make it.”

SE student Charles Brain used the obstacle course as a way to train for an upcoming event.

“I’m doing the Spartan 300 race in a month and a half. It’s very similar to this,” he said. “This reminds me of how much more I need to train to get ready for that race.”
