While it wasn’t the 2010 World Cup, students played hard in the SE Campus soccer intramural tournament, but the Colts stayed on top.
In the first game, the Colts defeated the Panthers 9-1, and most of the Colt players scored goals. Jurado Oscar scored two goals while Luis Garcia scored four goals, Joel Zubia, two, and Gustavo Rosari, one.
“We trained really hard to get out here and play,” Oscar said.
The Colts then played Mansfield United. The Colts went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Matthew Kent, goalie for Mansfield United, said it is not his natural position.
“I’m doing a lot better than I thought I would,” he said. “I didn’t plan on playing goalie when I came out here. They just threw the gloves on me.”
Stephanie Howard, Mansfield United captain injured her right knee in the second half. The Colts went on a 9-1 run and won 10-2.
“We came in this tournament as the underdogs,” Howard said. “We have a lot of skill. We just need to utilize it in the right areas.”
DS blew out Arlington SE in an 8-1 win to play the Colts in the intramural championship game.
Both teams played well offensively to tie up the first half 2-2.
Colts player Garcia said his team needed to play better defense in the second half.
“Our offense was all right. We had some problems on defense,” he said.
The Colts played better defense after halftime, only allowing DS to score two goals in the second half.
The Colts won 10-4.
Colts captain Jonathan Chavez said he wasn’t sure how his team was going to play DS.
“We didn’t know this team that well, but we tried to keep up with them,” he said. “We dominated the whole game. Our goalie made big plays, and that helped.”
