Twitter is quite possibly the most annoying social networking site. Not only is Twitter confusing to a technological novice like me, it is also a baffling form of social media.
Listen to me. I’m like an old man bewildered at the sight of whippersnappers on their Gameboys.
When I look at Twitter, I can’t help but be confused. I see crazy symbols used only when falling asleep on a keyboard. Tweets are filled with #’s, @ and the mysterious “RT.” It’s as if I’m looking at the codes from the Matrix movies.
It’s literally a foreign language to me. I might as well read Latin or decipher cave paintings.
Twitter seems designed to let everyone know what you are doing at all times. The last thing I need to know, or want to know for that matter, is that Joe Farnarkle is “taking out the trash. LOL.” I guess we can expect a movie about Twitter coming out called The Unnecessary Network.
A few members of our own newspaper staff have Twitter accounts. Nothing is more maddening than those tweeters who shall not be named tweeting to each other all around me, snickering as they do it. Here I am in the middle of this Twitter triangle unable to remotely fathom what in Sam Hill is going on. It’s like one big inside joke, and I am on the outside. Just like middle school.
The Twitterers with the biggest fan bases are either adored or maligned celebrities. Their twittering even makes the front page of yahoo.com, which means whenever I open my computer, I must see what silly celebrity caused a ruckus in the Twitterverse.
What I can’t quite wrap my head around is the need to follow these celebrities as if they were close friends. Isn’t every aspect of celebrity life broadcast and detailed enough?
Some celebrities have interesting Twitter accounts. Other Tweeters like Kim Kardashian only seem to serve my point that Twitter is a useless bore of a forum, as evidenced by this tweet, “Just had the best spray tan in Miami with Fabiola @SobeTan.”
Wow. People actually read these? This is how people spend their time? That’s time they can never get back.
