Hispanic Heritage Calendar

Now-Oct. 10
Student services will hold a photo contest for Hispanic Heritage Month. To enter Celebracion de Cultura, students should submit photo entries to student activities in WSTU 2811. Winners will be announced Oct. 13 at the Lectura Latina event.

 

Sept. 28
Robert Tinajero and Christina Martinez will host the Hispanic Heritage Month Read–In in the library on South Campus 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Faculty and staff are invited to attend and participate in readings of literary works relating to Hispanic culture. Refreshments will be provided.

 

Sept. 28
University of Texas at Arlington political science professor Jose Angel Gutierrez will speak about Hispanic Leadership in the 20th Century. The event, sponsored by the Organization of Latin American Students and student activities, will be 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A) on NE Campus.

 

Sept. 29
Dr. Ed Perez and Rebecca Balcarcel of the NE English department will perform original poetry and music inspired by Balcarcel’s book Palabras In Each Fist. The performance will take place from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A).

 

Sept. 29
Dr. John Menchaca will discuss diabetes in the Hispanic community at noon in the TRTR Energy Auditorium on TR Campus. Menchaca specializes in the treatment of children with kidney disorders.

 

Sept. 30
The Hispanic Women’s Network of Fort Worth will hold a presentation on the impact of Latina higher education at noon in Action A on TR Campus.

 

Oct. 5, 12
Dr. Juan Araujo, assistant professor from the University of North Texas at Dallas, will present Writing Your Heritage workshops at 1 p.m. in the SE Campus library (ESED 1213A). The workshops will help students explore their culture and family heritage. The first workshop will focus more on how-to techniques.

 

Oct. 5
Abrazando al Exito, a fun evening of events for students from all campuses with guest speaker Edgar “Shoboy” Sotelo, will be held 6-8:30 p.m. on TR Campus. Students may register at tccd.volunteerhub.com.

 

Oct. 6
South history instructor Carlos Rovelo will speak on The History of Chocolate and its Hispanic roots. Attendees will get a free chocolate tasting. The session is 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the SSTU Living Room on South Campus.

 

Oct. 13
NW student services will present Lectura Latina 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Winners from Celebracion de Cultura will be announced. The location will be announced later.

 

Oct. 14
WFAA anchor Gloria Campos will speak at a leadership experience summit at 1 p.m. in Action A on TR Campus.

 

Oct. 14
SE Campus will hold Untold Stories — The Effects of War 11:45 a.m.-12:40 p.m. in the North Ballroom. Hispanic students and faculty will share their stories and thoughts about how war has changed their lives.
