Hallelujah, it’s raining threes.
NW Campus held its three-point shooting contest Sept. 22, which turned out to be an entertaining exhibition.
Nine competitors showed off their prowess from behind the arc.
“Each shooter will get 20 balls total with four at each station,” NW intramural coordinator Ryan Stewart said. “And there will be a one-minute time limit.”
The top four from the first round would shoot it out in the final round to decide the winner, he said.
The pre-shootout warm-up seemed to be sponsored by Acme because the competition drew so many bricks. Once the event started, however, the shooters got their act together and found a rhythm.
The average number of shots made in the first round hovered around five. While not great, it still showcased some talented shooters.
One player who stood out was eventual winner Joe Torres. Sporting textbook shooting form, Torres went 15-for-20 in the first round.
“That man can shoot,” spectator Ivan Kovacevik said after Torres’ big first-round display. “He’s got it in the bag.”
With eight being the number to beat in the final round, it was Torres who stepped up last and sank 11 of his shots, including the first four in a row, to clinch the victory.
“I had only 11 in the final round ’cause I heard them say I had nine, so I didn’t try as hard on the last few,” Torres said with a laugh.
Torres said he has played basketball all his life and usually plays both point and shooting guard positions.
“Threes are my specialty,” he said.
