The 10 players that signed up for dodgeball in the NE Campus gym Nov. 4 were divided into two teams that proceeded to play a best-out-of-15 tournament.
Going over the rules, NE HPE instructor Kim Kerby-Dickman addressed the orange and yellow balls that littered the dodgeball court.
“We are using the soft, squishy balls where it’s almost like getting hit with a Nerf ball,” she said. “So you might think you didn’t get hit even if you do.”
Kerby-Dickman went over the boundaries of the court, restrictions on throws aimed at heads and the duration of games.
“We will go until everyone is out,” she said.
The first two games went to Team 1 with some great throws exhibited.
The rest of the games went back and forth between teams with rule disputes, good-natured trash talk and acrobatic catches riddled throughout.
By the time the final out was made, Team 1 had defeated Team 2, 9-6. The games were fast-paced and seemingly enjoyed by all.
“It was so fun,” Team 1 member Juan Gonzalez said.
He said that, at times, he used his teammates as human shields and aimed low.
“I just used everything I learned from that movie, Dodgeball,” he said.
Team 2 member Michael Mrkacek wasn’t fazed by his team losing.
“I didn’t care about it [losing],” he said. “I was just trying to peg people and not get hit.”
