Preparation is key to early success

Fall’s weather-relief is probably the furthest thing from a student’s mind. Instead of the blistering sun, some students can think only about the heat of their red faces on the first day of class.

The anxiety of new professors, new faces and making the grade can consume some students.

The thought of the unknown affects everyone a little differently. For some, a fresh start could not come too soon while others cringe at the thought of change. The comfortable, cozy spot they’re in is fine.

No matter how different this semester may be, with a good attitude and a little discipline, students can succeed at TCC.

Here are just a few tips to get started. Nothing is fool-proof, but at least you can try to prepare for those things in your control. Then when an element out of your control occurs, it is just one less worry.

Know the three W’s: Why am I here? What do I want? Where do I want to be/go?

If this is easier said than done, just decide what you want to accomplish by December. Try writing down your answers. Then whip out another sheet of college ruled paper and list your exact semester goals.

Log on to CampusCruiser, print your class syllabus and read it! Professors often give bonus heads up in the most obvious places. It might tell you the supplies you will need and or textbook(s) required for the course. If something is listed in the syllabus, chances are you are going to need it.

Get plenty of rest before class. A surefire way to start the semester off wrong is to miss the easiest 20-minute lecture of the semester because you were drooling on your new shirt.

Don’t skip breakfast. Grab a banana or apple and drink some orange juice before you dash off to your first class, whether it’s at 8 a.m. or the crack of noon.
