Before the honeymoon, before the kids, even before the wedding come cold feet.
Some Girls, a play written by Neil LaBute, is a humorous story about a man’s experiences revisiting four women he loved and left as he awaits his wedding to a younger woman.
The comedy opens next week in the NE Playhouse on NE Campus.
Guy, played by Lloyd Harvey, is a teacher turned writer who decides to visit four women he had loved and dumped and records the encounters as material for an upcoming book.
“It is a show everyone can relate to if you’ve ever loved or thought you were in love,” he said.
Sam, played by Melissa Fulps, is Guy’s high school sweetheart whom he abandoned just before prom.
Fulps, who has had experience with modern plays, says this has been one of the “most fun challenges” she has been a part of.
The play consists of four scenes, four girls and one guy. Rehearsals for this performance began Feb. 4.
The play is directed by Stephen Thomas, associate professor of drama.
Thomas chose to do this play because he has always enjoyed LaBute’s writing.
“This play is very pertinent to today’s life,” he said.
Thomas said he wanted to direct this play to highlight some of the talented women in this department.
“It is unusual to have a play with mostly women and just one male,” he said.
The play, he said, is about “the state of male selfishness of young people today.”
Some of the challenges encountered by the director and the actors of this play have been getting in touch with how the dialogue is written, Thomas said.
“The rhythm of the play, the dark humor of the play and its bizarre circumstances have been a challenge,” he said.
Generally when directing, Thomas said he tries to tell the story very simply and clearly and lets the play do most of the work.
Thomas would like the audience to leave “questioning the surface value of relationships in general.”
During intermission and throughout the play, the audience can expect to hear songs from the Rolling Stones’ album Some Girls. The play contains some adult situations, language and 20 seconds of smoking.
The performances will be Wednesday-Saturday, March 5-8, at 8 p.m. with a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. in the NE Playhouse. The play is free to all TCC students, faculty and staff, $3 for non-TCC students and senior citizens 65 or over and $6 for the general public.
