Women’s History Month celebrations throughout the TCC District will experience a few echoes rather than a bang this year, but that’s a good thing.

Echoes of the Past and Voices of Hope, hosted by TCC student activities, is a program honoring both Women’s History Month and Black History Month.

Maxine Maxwell, an actress and member of the New York Foundation for the Arts, will perform a number of monologues as she crawls into the skin of six historic black women.

The program opens with her becoming Sojourner Truth, anti-slavery activist; Ida B. Wells, journalist, and Elizabeth Eckford, one of the Little Rock Nine.

The second half of the performance, Voices of Hope has Maxwell falling into character as Harriet Tubman, Madam C.J. Walker and pilot Bessie Coleman.

The program is a celebration of the spirit of African-American women who believed they could make their dreams a reality.

Maxwell will introduce each character along the journey, and the audience will be able to follow the path of each woman.

The show will be on three campuses, first on NE Campus Wednesday March 12, at 12:20 p.m. in the Center Corner (NSTU 1615A).

Thursday, March 13, Maxwell will be on NW Campus at 9:30 a.m. in WSTU 1303, then on SE Campus at 1 p.m. in the North Ballroom.

Admittance is free and open to the public.
