NE Campus will begin its annual 5-on-5 basketball season with the first games scheduled to start Feb. 7.

The tournament-style play is held 1-4 p.m. every Friday throughout the month of February with three to four games scheduled each day.

Students interested in participating must register as either a team or a free agent in the gym by Jan. 29 although some late registrations will be accepted prior to the first game.

“We’ve made the registration process very student-friendly, and there is no entry fee,” said Laura Bradford, a NE Campus health and physical education instructional associate.

The sign-up sheets are located on the desk of the basketball supervisor in the main gym.

“Students can come over at any time while the gym is open to register themselves or their teams,” she said.

The team captain and free-agent meeting will be held in the gym Jan. 29, following the free throw and 3-point contest that begins at 12:30 p.m.

In the past, the tournament has drawn an average of seven or eight teams into play.

While every team may not give their all throughout the season, a few good rivalries sometimes appear and go head-to-head throughout the tournament, Bradford said.

In addition to the prestige of winning the season, the top team will also receive free T-shirts for each member.

“The tournament is a great way to promote exercise and let students show off their skill,” Bradford said.
