TR Campus will introduce new, innovative initiatives at its 14th Leadership Summit, said Lionel Bailey, coordinator for the Center for Leadership Development.
“We want to focus on teaching students leadership principles and getting them connected with organizations to demonstrate these skills in the community,” he said.
To achieve this, the summit will be the first to have organizations who have volunteer needs on-site following the keynote presentation by Allan Saxe.
“This is going to be something a little different than the type of presentation students get all the time,” he said.
Saxe said he wants to encourage students to be leaders without necessarily being in charge.
Saxe has taught political science at the University of Texas in Arlington for 46 years and also teaches government classes on SE Campus.
“Students have felt his impact for years, and he recognizes what the next generation needs to know,” Bailey said.
Another feature of this leadership gathering will be a discussion panel to follow the keynote presentation. The panel’s goal is to discuss the keynote presentation with differing perspectives from other academic disciplines.
The panel will consist of TR math and science divisional dean Dreand Johnson, philosophy chair Chad Wooley, government instructor Jinnell Killingsworth and ethics associate professor Mark Anderson.
The leadership summit will take place 1-3:30 p.m. Feb. 17 in Action A (TRTR 4202).
The event is free. However, students must pre-register at www.tccd.volunteerhub.com or by contacting Bailey at 817-515-1191. Registration will be open until 5 p.m. Feb. 16.
