The balls flew fast and furious across the SE gym as six teams went to battle during the dodgeball tournament Jan. 31.

After whittling down the opposing teams, last year’s champions, Los Aztecas, emerged victorious for the second year in a row.

Each pairing pitted teams against each other in a best-of-seven-games match with the winner moving on to the next round.

In the first match, Get Money defeated Solo Baron 4-2.

During the second pairing of the day, Los Aztecas proved their dominance early by easily defeating Bella Donna with four straight wins.

“We were last year’s champs, and we’re going to go all the way this year,” said NE student and team captain Miguel Mendoza after their first match.

Next up, Free Agents took on Solo Baron. Free Agents got off to a rocky start but quickly gained their footing, defeating Solo Baron 4-2.

Los Aztecas took to the floor again and faced off against Just Don’t. The match was close, but Los Aztecas were able to maintain their dominance and won the match 4-2.

Get Money went up against Free Agents but could not repeat their earlier performance, and Free Agents walked away from the match with a 4-2 win.

As the afternoon wore on, it became apparent that one of two teams would walk away with the title: Los Aztecas or Free Agents.

While most of the members of Free Agents said they were playing for extra credit points in their PE class, SE student Samantha Avillan had her own reasons for joining the team.

“I’m not here for the extra credit. I just like dodgeball,” she said. “It’s good exercise and a lot of fun!”

The next two teams featured Get Money squaring off against Just Don’t. After a lengthy bout, Get Money defeated their opponents 4-2 and third place in the tournament.

“Our minds are set on being the champions two years in a row,” said SE student and Los Aztecas team member Arturo Hidalgo before taking the floor.

In the final match of the day, returning champions Los Aztecas went up against Free Agents. Free Agents fought a good battle, but they couldn’t stop the onslaught of Los Aztecas, who won the match 4-2.

“The students have a lot of fun and get in a good workout,” said SE Campus health and physical education instructor Shahzad Nazir. “That’s why we do these events each semester.”
