Networking benefits explained on South

Networking is designed to empower and be empowered, a speaker told South students March 26 during Brand U at Business Mixers.

Dexter Coleman, a networking and consultant coach for Vision Life Now Consulting, said he stresses the importance of selflessness and speaking positively through networking.

“How can I help him or her reach their goal?” he said. “It gives me credibility because I’m focusing on somebody else.”

Networking requires vision, purpose, balance and diversity, he said.

“You have to have a vision for your career or your business or your life,” Coleman said. “A vision is a pace or standard on where you want to be.”

Networking is about relationship building, Coleman said. In the period of time when people begin to network, purposes will be discovered.

“Purpose is twofold,” he said. “Some of us don’t know our purpose.”

Networking is a two-way street, Coleman said. One should never expect one-way communication.

“Balance means something different for everybody, and it changes daily,” he said.

When asked what balance meant, student Pam Forbes said balance would be a happier, successful family life.

To be more efficient, a schedule should be made, Coleman said.

By showing sincere interest in people, the actual communication will be the focus of interest for potential new contacts. People should intentionally establish diverse strategic partnerships, Coleman said.

“No success is ever done alone,” he said.
