The game was a warm-up for an upcoming flag football tournament.
Two teams faced off in a scrimmage game as NE Campus kicked off its flag football season April 18.
The low turnout was most likely due to the holiday weekend, said NE health and physical education supervisor Aamer Quresh.
“We only have 14 players, so we’re doing a scrimmage game today,” he said. “We should have more people next week, and we’ll do a bracket tournament.”
NE student Jesus Romero said the chance to compete against his classmates was the main reason he showed up for flag football.
“It’s kind of like what you train for all year,” he said. “Even if it’s not a big game, competition is everything.”
The spirit of competition was also a big draw for NE student Chris Mediola.
“There’s just something about lining up against your opponent and facing off against them,” he said.
Adaw Gwath may have been the only girl on the field, but she said she wasn’t worried about playing with the guys.
“I love intense sports,” she said. “I play football with my brothers all the time.”
Quresh said that the flag football rules give an advantage to girl players by giving double points to any scoring play they participate in.
Gwath’s team used this advantage as often as they could, placing her as the quarterback each time they reached the 20-yard line.
The mood was lighthearted throughout the scrimmage game, but things should take a different turn as the bracket tournament starts up April 23 and 25.
