South students learn techniques for handling multiple life roles

Students find difficulty in balancing roles since some are also mothers, fathers, employees and sometimes more, the South Campus nurse told students last week.

As part of the Women In New Roles program, Flo Stanton, coordinator of South health services, presented the first fall health forum Sept. 5 on South Campus.

The objectives of Balancing Multiple Roles were to add role awareness by prioritizing and finding ways to deal with role conflict, Stanton said.

When roles are imbalanced, it can lead to stress.

“ Stress manifests in many ways, in our behavior, eating, sleeping,” she said.

During the forum, students shared individual concerns through group discussion and by filling out assessments.

Stanton offered advice to help them cope with roles.

“ Allow pamper-me-time, even if for just five minutes.”

Role of self is many times over looked by other roles, Stanton said.

“ If we are not in the right relation to self, how can we be in right relation with others?” she said.

Destiny Payne, South Campus student, said she enjoyed the interaction between the audience and the presenter.

“ [I liked] how she talked to us and interacted to help others who have the same problems as me,” she said.

Health services with Women In New Roles will sponsor other health forums the first Wednesday in October and November.
