SE students picked up advice on transferring during a Sept. 26 workshop on campus.
Cyrus Crosby, a SE academic advisor, informed students of university admissions deadlines, application requirements and transfer tips during the workshop sponsored by Student Success Seminars.
“ Being aware of and remembering deadlines are important factors when transferring to a university successfully,” he said.
The seminar provided TCC students with information to ease the transfer process to a university. University applications, a list of deadlines, a “how to” guide and transcript ordering information were supplied at the seminar.
Crosby said each student must first decide on a college to attend and contact the institution before transferring. Once this communication has taken place, transfer requirements such as GPA requirements, number of hours needed to transfer and THEA score requirements must be evaluated.
Some requirements that are over looked when transferring include being TSI complete and core complete, Crosby said.
“ Every student must be aware of their own student status,” he said.
Crosby reviewed the Texas Common Application and gave a copy to students attending the seminar. He said requesting an official transcript is one step in completing the application.
Crosby provided a list of helpful dates because students need to know the best times to transfer when financial aid is a major factor.
Usually the process starts in the fall semester, so a student must be aware of all deadlines in order to utilize financial aid properly.
Common pitfalls can occur when transferring, so Crosby provided a deadline list. He also warned students of the excessive hours law that has just begun to affect tuition rates.
“ Transfer shock is common for many students and can be overcome once assimilation occurs,” he said.
Most transfer students face this shock while adjusting to the university environment. Crosby said a shift in grades usually occurs, so students should realize there will be more students, teaching styles will differ, and a larger campus will take time to get used to.
