The surgical technology program on NE Campus is reaching out to the community through the gLOVE Project. ”
Sigma Tau, the surgical technology student association, started the project last year and collected gloves, mittens, hats and other winter clothing as part of its community service.
As the student members participate in community service, they also want to increase public awareness of their profession.
Cindy Mask, a certified surgical technologist, TCC instructor of the program and Sigma Tau adviser, started the project last winter.
Mask said her inspiration for the project came from her firefighter husband.
He and his fire hall colleagues annually participate in Fill the Boot National Drive. During the drive, firefighters collect funds in a gigantic boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Mask adopted the glove idea because surgical technologists are always gloved while helping the surgeon in the operating room.
The project helps students better explain their profession while doing community service by warming cold hands each winter, she said.
Sigma Tau is asking all TCC campuses to be a part of the gLOVE Project by donating warm clothes or volunteering.
Starting Monday, Nov. 5, a bin will be available for donations on NE Campus.
