Spring intramurals led by basketball, volleyball

Students who missed out on playing sports in high school will have a chance to play in college this semester. TCC offers opportunities for students and faculty to be involved in sports through spring intramural competitions.

Four SE students get ready to play sand volleyball during last year’s spring intramural season. Indoor volleyball will be offered this semester on NW starting Feb. 7.

“It’s for students to keep active and to have fun,” SE athletic instructor Shahzad Nazir said. “It’s obviously not like the NCAA where there’s rivalries and special player awards, but it’s a lot of fun for students and for staff.”

Other than flag football, volleyball and basketball are popular sports at TCC, Nazir said.

“Students, faculty and even security play volleyball,” he said. “They play together.”

SE student Macy Burdette said she plans to play volleyball this semester.

“I love sports and being physically active,” she said. “Having another extracurricular activity will help me stay active and busy while still having fun. Studies show that young people who play sports are more likely to live a healthier and longer life.”

Nazir said anyone wanting to be part of a sport just needs to register.

“It’s really not complicated,” he said. “All you have to do is sign up and there you go.”

Nazir said students don’t have to worry about being out of shape, not being a good athlete or being new to the sport.

“That’s what I am here for,” he said. “I am here to help students get in better shape and improve their skills. Everyone is here to learn.”

NE student Dieudonne Samudio said he thought about kickboxing this semester.

“I know it’s not seen as a sport, but it’s a great way to get you in good shape for other sports,” he said. “I haven’t done martial arts in a while, but I still have good fighting skills, and I am willing to learn anything that I never learned.”

Samudio said he’s interested in playing basketball too.

“I am pretty fast and tall,” he said. “So I think I am well-qualified for basketball.”

SE physical education instructor Danny Aguirre said getting to be in TCC sports is great for students.

“A lot of students had dreams to play basketball, football, volleyball, baseball and softball in high school and get scholarships to play in college, but, unfortunately, many do not make it,” he said. “Like Shahzad said, it’s not like the NCAA, but this is a great opportunity for students who are still interested in college sports.”
