Finding a decent parking space on campus can be a headache, especially when late students must park in the back.
South Campus’ Phi Theta Kappa is hosting a raffle fundraiser for president Peter Jordan’s and vice president Larry Rideaux’s parking spaces.
South PTK president Joel Loveland said when he asked Jordan about the idea, Jordan immediately said yes while Rideaux willingly offered his spot for a second-place winner.
“I mean who doesn’t want to park in the front?” he said. “And you get the opportunity to park in the president and vice president’s parking spot.”
Tickets will be $1 each, Loveland said.
“We don’t want them to be too expensive,” he said.
The current fundraiser ends Oct. 8. Prizes are a $50 gift card to the South bookstore for the first-place winner and a free oil change to Grumpy’s in Crowley for second place, Loveland said. The parking raffle starts Oct. 8 and continues till Oct. 31.
“I want to give us enough time to sell tickets and hopefully raise enough money for our chapter,” he said.
The winners will have the spaces Nov. 3-14, Loveland said.
“When we do get a winner, I will get their names, ID numbers, parking permit number, car type and license plate number. I have to give to the police and also to Jordan’s and Rideaux’s secretaries,” he said.
Loveland said he will sell tickets noon-2 p.m. every Monday in the Student Center and also at 4 p.m. every Wednesday in the SSTU Forum Room.
South student Frankie Fierros said he knows about PTK but didn’t know about the raffle.
“It might be significant to somebody who has so much going on in their life that they can’t ever find good parking when they go to school,” he said.
Fierros said he doesn’t plan to buy any tickets, and he would much rather see more comical ideas for fundraisers.
“I’d go with throwing things like water balloons and pies at professors,” he said. “As for the prizes or proceeds, I’d still have to think about it, but I know I’d want more than a parking space.”
