NE Campus players come together for volleyball

Ten people came together for the first NE Campus volleyball event of the semester Nov. 14.

The event began with eight men but eventually grew to 10 players including one woman.

Some players joined in the event because they had been playing basketball nearby and were interested when they saw the equipment being set up.

Robert McClish had been playing basketball but was actually there for the event and plays volleyball for fun.

“I play on the open court days and have played volleyball since I was 8, so for about 14 years, and I play for fun,” McClish said.

More players came around later, including Shayna Vi. Vi usually only comes for open court volleyball but came for the event and was the only woman participating.

“Being the only girl was interesting,” Vi said. “But, I’ve been the only girl other times, so it wasn’t intimidating.”

Gym supervisor Jon Rea was also among those playing and was on the winning team.

“I am not a frequent participant in the sports,” Rea said. “But I hosted recreational volleyball when I went here and thought it would be fun.”

Many of the players had experience playing, but a few beginners were present, such as player Josh McClain.

“I watched the ball hit the ground when it was coming to me,” he said. “It was a very crucial point in the game, and I feel like I let my team down.”

The gym has open court volleyball 2-5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and will have volleyball tournaments 2 p.m. every Friday.
