NE program lends help to transfer students

NE Campus offers a free three-part program every semester and open to all students interested in transferring to another university.

The first session “Transfer Essentials” runs 12:30-1:30 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Larry Darlage Center Corner (NSTU 1615A). Students will get general details about transferring to their target university such as information about the application process, TCC courses that are transferrable and instructions on transferring their scholarships and financial aid.

Vanessa Ximenez, transfer academy coordinator, will go beyond what the transfer center normally does, she said.

“The difference between the program and what we (the transfer center) do is that we go way more in depth,” she said.

The second session “Getting Interactive” will be 12:30-1:30 p.m. March 30 in the Center Corner. Students enrolled in the transfer academy can meet with university representatives and ask them specific questions about the schools’ programs, degrees they offer, admission requirements and available scholarships.

This session will help narrow down the choices for students, Ximenez said.

“If the students don’t have an idea on where they want to go to school, this is where they’ll start thinking, ‘Oh, I want to go to this school because it has a nursing program,’’’ she said.

The final session “Tour de Transfer,” will occur sometime later this semester. Students will be shuttled from NE Campus to the University of Texas at Arlington for a walking tour as well as receive a presentation with detailed information about the school.

Other schools could be toured as well, Ximenez said.

“Now, we are looking into it [touring other schools] because obviously there is interest in other schools, but for right now, we only have the tour set up with UTA,” she said.

As an incentive for completing all three sessions, students are eligible to enter a drawing to win a $500 transfer scholarship to the school of their choice. Eligible students also must have at least a 2.5 GPA and have completed 45 semester hours.

To enroll in the transfer academy, call the transfer center at 817-515-6531, email vanessa.ximenez@tccd.edu or register online at http://tccd.ne.volunteerhub.com.

Participating students will receive a free lunch at all sessions.
