TCC students planning to move on to a four-year school can visit the transfer center for information on schools, scholarships or even just some tips and mentoring.
Available on every TCC campus, the centers offer many resources, application and admissions assistance as well as university research and advising.
“My ultimate goal is for a student to leave feeling more confident about furthering his or her education,” SE academic advisor Terrell Shaw said.
Transferring is easy and can be rewarding if students get their necessary transfer materials turned in on time, Shaw said.
“I give out a checklist to help keep the student on track and not falling behind on dates or any important steps it takes to getting them ready to transfer,” he said.
Shaw said students should remember that when they transfer, their GPA transfers with them.
“Preparing to transfer, you should make sure you pay attention to your GPA and your grades for scholarships and to meet transferring admission requirements,” he said.
Students like Asah Rego use the resources that the transfer center has to offer as well as talk with the transfer advisors for tips and mentoring.
“The transfer center advisor helped me realize I needed to pay attention, study hard and make better grades to move on to a university,” he said.
The transfer center keeps the up-to-date scholarships posted as well as access to different scholarship-based websites.
The transfer center is also a good place for mentoring since many students are undecided about their majors.
Student Asia Bryant said she was struggling with declaring a major, but the transfer advisor helped her explore various options and pick a major that fit her interests.
“I like visiting the transfer center sometimes to just speak with my advisor and get some advice,” she said.
Students should start early in the semester looking at scholarship opportunities in the transfer center as well as meeting with a transfer advisor. The sooner the better, Shaw said.
“Waiting late to transfer can be a really stressful process,” he said. “I encourage students to come in early and get started.”
