Sept. 14 State Rep. Ramon Romero Jr. (D-Fort Worth) will speak to students about the importance of understanding the Constitution and detail how he got involved with politics noon-1 p.m. in the TR Idea Store. Sept. 15 Students can attend a free screening of The New Juarez all day in the SSTU Living Room on South Campus. The film analyzes the dramatic drop in death rates in Juarez, Mexico, between 2010 and 2012. Sept. 15 NE student activities will hold a screening of The New Juarez 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Darlage Center Corner (NSTU 1615A). The film showcases the violence in Mexico that has led to the death of over 1 million people. For more information, contact student activities at 817-515-6688.

Sept. 15 SE Campus will begin its observance of Hispanic Heritage Month with a Hispanic Heritage Kickoff celebration 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. in the North Ballroom. The event will include musical entertainment, a presentation on foreign language techniques and Mexican and Latin American culture. Attendees will be treated to refreshments. Sept. 15 South Campus will begin its Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with the Dia de Cultura Kickoff 12:30-2:30 p.m. in the SSTU dining hall. The event aims to create an appreciation for Hispanic food, music and language. The event is open to students, faculty and staff. Sept. 15-16 SE will offer free showings of the documentary The New Juarez. The film, which depicts the state of drug violence in modern-day Juarez, Mexico, will be shown in the ESCC HUB 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m., 2:30-3:50 p.m. and again on Sept. 16 9:35-11 a.m. The final screening will be followed by a discussion in the SE library classroom 11:45 a.m.–1 p.m. For more information, contact SE student activities at 817-515-3595.

Sept. 16 Documentarian Charlie Minn (The New Juarez) will speak 3-4 p.m. in the SSTU Living Room on South Campus. Minn will discuss the violence and tragedies in Mexico as well as his new film about 43 missing students from Guerrero. Minn’s film can be viewed Sept. 15 on South Campus. Sept. 23 South Campus student activities will host a Hispanic-Serving Institutions Fair 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the SSTU dining hall. Hispanic-serving institutions are colleges where Hispanic students contribute 25 percent of the total enrollment. Sept. 23 The SE library will offer a partial screening of the film Documented 2:20-3:40 p.m. The documentary by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas sheds light on the struggles faced by those seeking citizenship. Sept. 25 TR students can attend the 27th Leadership eXperience Summit: Diversity in Leading 12:30-3:30 p.m. in Action Suite A. Eva Bonilla, vice chair of the national Latina organization MANA North Texas, will be the keynote speaker. Interested students should RSVP to the student volunteer hub.
