Rapper T.I. recently offended listeners with sexist comments during an interview on The Whoolywood Shuffle, a SiriusXM radio show.
When asked his opinion on Democrat Hillary Clinton’s potential presidency, T.I. responded with, “Not to be sexist, but I can’t vote for the leader of the free world to be a woman,” Vibe magazine reported.
Then, as if to justify his remark, he said, “Because every other position that exists, I think a woman could do well. But the president? It’s kind of like, I just know that women make rash decisions emotionally … and I sure would hate to just set off a nuke.”
And because T.I. loves shoving his foot in his mouth, he continued, “I think you might be able to get the Loch Ness Monster elected before [a woman].”
Beyond portraying himself ignorantly and offending listeners, he raises awareness to the prejudiced and uninformed decision-making skills of some voters.
Citizens should focus on candidates’ policies and goals for their time in office, i.e. what actually matters in choosing a president, rather than automatically excluding potential candidates for their sex.
It’s also reasonable to think many impressionable voters heard T.I.’s sexist remarks and will now never vote for a female presidential candidate.
This raises the question: Will people actually vote for an inferior candidate based solely on his or her sex? We already know the answer.
T.I. has since tweeted an apology, but the problem at the core of this scandal is still a significant issue in society.
America wouldn’t even be the first country to have a female president. Canada, Turkey, Thailand and South Korea, among others, have all had female leaders.
Instead of saying a woman can’t lead the free world, we should ask what better place for a woman to be a nation’s leader than in the free world?
