NE to hold session on understanding suicide signs, risks

NE Campus will host a wellness presentation Nov. 3 to teach students and faculty to recognize suicide risk factors.

The ASK Gatekeeper training, presented by counselor Masika Smith and the NE advising and counseling department, tries to steer people toward the proper channels and methods to use when facing such situations.

Special services coordinator Ronda Isaacs said much can be done to inform students about suicide warning signs and risk factors.

“In Texas alone, there are 2,500 suicide deaths [every] year,” she said. ”It’s the second-leading cause of death among 25-34-year-olds. We want to get out there and raise awareness as to what those warning signs may be.”

Isaacs also brought up the point of how to approach someone who may be in trouble.

“Students may think, ‘What will they think of me if I ask them if they’re OK?’ ASK is an acronym,” she said. “It stands for ‘Ask about suicide. Seek more information and keep safe.’ And, most importantly, ‘Know where and how to refer someone.’”

The presentation will take place 1-2:30 p.m. in the Community Room (NBSS 1103). Students can register for this training at http://tccd.student-hub.com. For more information, contact Isaacs at 817-515-6264.
