South’s dance program will have a concert May 5 showcasing students’ talent and growth by incorporating various styles of dance.
Dance instructor Kiera Amison choreographed several pieces for the concert as did students and a guest choreographer. Paradigm will feature modern, contemporary, ballet folklorico, jazz and hip-hop choreography.
The only obstacle faced was scheduling.
“There are 10 company members, and because of work and/or school schedules, they couldn’t make it to every rehearsal,” Amison said. “Fortunately, everyone was able to be a part of the dance.”
Amison and her dancers prepared the concert in a short amount of time, beginning after spring break.
“I’m impressed with how hard the dancers have worked to create their own dances so quickly,” Amison said.
Student dancer Adriana Moreno said the audience will enjoy the show because of the plot incorporated into the dance.
“I hope they enjoy it,” she said. “We’ve incorporated more style into the dance. I think they will like the storyline we follow.”
Amison said she is proud of her group.
“In such a short period of time, I have seen a great deal of growth in each dancer,” she said. “Their dancing has improved by learning new choreography and by challenging themselves as choreographers. I’m extremely proud of them.”
Student dancer Samantha Franco said Amison is a great instructor.
“Well, we can’t say anything bad about her,” she said with a laugh. “But she’s very patient.”
Another student dancer, Cree Dillard, agreed.
“You can tell she’s very passionate about dancing,” she said.
Likewise, Amison had nothing but praise for her dancers.
“I have a wonderful group of dancers!” she said. “They are talented, dedicated and excited about dance. Dance is a demanding art form, and I have high expectations. There are times that I am strict and direct, but company directors have to be. That is how we get the best out of our students. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching them and learning from them. It’s been a fulfilling experience.”
Ballet Folklorico Mexico Lindo will perform as a guest in the show.
