More students are starting to seek out help from the NW math tutoring center with the approach of finals week.
The center offers students help from tutors and professors in the areas of math where they’re struggling.
NW instructional aide Rachael Watson said during finals week, an estimated 250-300 students per day will seek assistance from the tutoring center. In past semesters, as many as 500 students visited the center each day during finals.
“This is typically our busiest time of year,” she said. “There is definitely an influx of students right before every test during finals week.”
Tutoring sessions generally begin with a lecture taught by professors in the Math Emporium. Following the lecture, a student is assigned a computer test.
If the student fails the test, a tutor will attempt to teach, correct and explain the student’s mistakes so the student can avoid making them in the future.
The time spent in the combination of the Math Emporium lesson and the online test can range from an hour and a half to three hours.
“The Math Emporium students come all at once for all of their classes,” Watson said. “It can be crazy, but we handle it.”
With finals week quickly approaching, Watson and the NW math tutoring center can be a valuable resource for students stressed about their math classes.
“Professors are there to work with students if they are struggling,” she said.
