Intramural sports offer students wide variety

Many campuses will offer multiple intramural sports this semester for all members of the TCC community.

Participants need to be a current TCC student, faculty or staff member to participate and can play on any campus, not just the one they attend. However, not all campuses are participating, and not all campuses have the same events.

Johnathan Henderson is in charge of the intramural program on South and has been working on the schedule since last semester.

“Students should expect events this spring to be basketball, outdoor soccer, video gaming tournaments and more,” he said.

These events can get students actively and socially involved, Henderson said. Students and staff can play together or against each other.

SE intramural coordinator Shahzad Nazir is looking forward to the many events offered on his campus.

“We will have basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, soccer, quidditch and an obstacle course,” he said.

NE Campus typically has one event a month ranging from tennis, racquetball, a three-mile fun run to a three-point shootout.

It also has open gym for basketball 3-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and open gym volleyball 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

NW intramural coordinator Aaron Garcia said intramurals are a great way to bring student clubs closer together or to compete against other clubs.

NW offers a trophy for the club that participates in the most events.

From January to May, the NW schedule is packed full, Garcia said.

“It was brought to our attention that students would like to have more variety, so we added more events than ever,” he said.

NW will offer basketball, soccer, volleyball, football, a game face obstacle race, softball, a lift-a-thon, ultimate Frisbee and dodgeball. A few more events are in the works, but Garcia is waiting for times and locations.

One event Garcia is looking forward to is a disc golf tournament similar to last year’s.

“We are so excited to announce that we will be having another disc golf tournament this spring, and [professional disc golfer] Jay Reading will be hosting it once again,” he said.

South students can go to IMLeagues.com/TCCD using their TCC email and sign up as a team or a free agent. This website is where all students and staff can find upcoming intramural events.

SE students can just show up the day of individual events. For team events, attendance at team captain meetings is required.

On NE and NW, interested participants can register at the events.
