Student Earth Advocates, a NE student organization, encourages students to help the environment. SEA is looking for new members to participate in educating others about improving the environment.
NE geology professor Meena Balakrishnan, organization adviser, actively encourages students to get involved. At the end of the fall semester, multiple SEA officers transferred to other schools or graduated, leaving leadership positions open.
“It is a student organization, so we look to having students be the drivers,” she said.
NE student and current SEA president Ashley Pharo created a Facebook page for organization members to share educational information and highlight upcoming club activities.
“For those of us with a busy schedule, this can be a great way to stay informed about club activities and what we discuss in meetings,” she said.
SEA encourages students to take charge of their knowledge about the planet and educate others to join them in their efforts to protect the environment. The organization allows students to be their own leaders and gain experience in running a group.
SEA also creates opportunities for students to get involved with education services for earth advocacy as well as environmental cleanups such as on beaches and in parks.
In previous years, SEA has participated in beach cleanups in Galveston and local cleanups that benefit smaller areas and businesses. Last year, 10 TCC students attended the Galveston beach cleanup and learned how pollution destroys a beach.
SEA has many upcoming events this semester, such as Earth Day Texas at Dallas’ Fair Park April 21-24, and it’s not too late to sign up.
Kim White, sales force administrator of Earth Day Texas, said it’s a free, three-day event that celebrates progress, hope and innovation. She said it’s the world’s largest annual forum for sharing initiatives, discoveries, research and information.
