Talk will inform about slave trade

Brad Borougerdi, SE history assistant professor, will talk about how the Atlantic slave trade impacted slavery in Setting the Record Straight Feb. 16 on SE Campus.

“I want to stop the stereotype of Africa being a ‘dark continent’ and inform the students of all the wonderful things that have come from Africa,” he said.

By discussing the history of slavery in Africa, Borougerdi hopes to eliminate some of the misconceptions students have about slavery.

“Students need to understand and learn about the African Diaspora and what really took place. People have a misunderstanding of what motivated the slave trade,” he said. “Many think that the European slave trade and the African slave trade were the same, and they’re not.”

Several years ago, Borougerdi gave a presentation called Unveiling the Myth, and he participated in a panel discussion about the N-word. He also wrote an article in the Journey of Hip-Hop Journal.

The presentation will be 10-11:20 a.m. in the library classroom.
