Workshop teaches students to spread suicide awareness

SE students learned April 5 the many concerns and issues of suicide, the second-leading cause of death.

“I believe it’s necessary to inform students not only of suicide but the leading factors and circumstances around the topic before the actual event,” counselor Michele Faith said.

Factors that lead to contemplating suicide can include depression, substance abuse, bullying and low self-esteem.

Contemplating suicide can also lead to out-of-character behavior both academically and socially, another sign, Faith said.

Faith said she has guided many students and now has made it her goal to raise awareness outside her office.

“I have been at TCC for about five years, and as well as being a licensed professional counselor, I have seen a lot of scenarios,” she said. “My inspiration derives from encouraging others to reach out, recognize how to and where to get help.”

Faith advised students of precautionary actions to take.

“If anyone you know is having trouble, take immediate action,” she said. “Tell someone who can help, and, most importantly, don’t keep it a secret.”
