Spectrum’s dance honors inclusion

South Campus’ Spectrum club will host its second annual “Slay Ball” event Nov. 17.

“The theme of the ball this year is ‘A Whole New World,’ a look into the life of the LGBT community,” club president Tyler Jackson said.

The ball serves as an outlet for students who are stressed with school and in their personal lives, Jackson said.

“It gives the students the opportunity to learn more on what Spectrum is about and helps them get involved with getting to know everyone,” he said. “They get to have a night of fun right before it comes down to serious times like finals.”

Students can expect live performances, a DJ, dancing, and free food and drinks along with a few surprises.

This event is one of the larger events held throughout the campus. Last year’s dance included a Great Gatsby-themed masquerade and featured multiple drag queen performances. Jackson expects this year’s attendance will surpass last fall’s more than 300 attendees.

TCC graduate Naomi Felton helped organize the ball last year and shared her experiences with the event.

“We wanted to do something that the school hadn’t done yet, so we held a masquerade ball,” Felton said. “The event pretty much took all semester to plan, but the amazing people involved helped make it as great as it was.”

Felton expressed her enjoyment in the inclusion represented by the events and encouraged students to participate.

“I love seeing Spectrum hold events like this because their mission is to include everyone no matter who you are,” she said.

The ball will run 6-11 p.m. in the SSTU Living Room. The recommended attire is semi-formal but not mandatory. RSVP is encouraged but not required. For more information, email spectrumsouthtcc@gmail.com.
