More offices should open later

Hello? Is anyone here? Hellooooo?

At that exact moment, the business hours for the registrar’s office on the door become clear. They closed a half-hour ago.

The next item on the “to-do list” — visit the financial aid office — seems all too familiar. The office closed two and a half hours ago.

At that moment, students’ frustrations set in, and their questions remain unanswered.

Many students who take classes at night and on weekends cannot take advantage of the business office or other services that daytime students can access.

If these offices extended their hours by only one hour, it would help out students who take classes on weeknights. On weekends, if these services opened up for half a day, it would benefit those students as well.

Unfortunately, this is not the case in all instances. However, some services are available to students who take night and weekend classes.

According to the TCC website, the registrar’s offices on all campuses stay open until 7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 5 p.m. Friday. Students can also visit the business office 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays when weekend classes are in session.

For students trying to get in touch with financial aid during the week, it might be tricky because all offices close at 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. However, each campus’ financial aid office extends its hours one day out of the week to stay open until 7 p.m., so students can still talk to a representative in person. (Mondays NW, Tuesday NE and TR, Wednesday SE and Thursday South.)

Students can access the gym at off-hours by using their student ID and a current class schedule. TR’s gym opens as early as 6 a.m. Monday-Friday and is open seven days a week while NE is open as late as 10 p.m. Monday-Friday. Students have access to South and SE Monday-Friday. Students on NW can access the gym Monday-Saturday.

Health service offices are also available to students. NE students can access the office seven days a week. TR and SE stay open until 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday for students.

If students need a quiet place to study, the library also stays open late. The libraries on NW, South, SE and NE stay open until 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday and TR is open until 9 p.m. Monday-Friday. Some campus libraries are open Saturday and Sunday as well.

Even though students taking classes at night or weekends might think they don’t have as many resources, they actually have access to a lot of services. On the upside, TCC is working hard to accommodate its students.

However, the college still can do more to provide services for night and weekend students it wants to attract.
