Campus student activities offices give students a variety of services ranging from the formation of student clubs, new student orientation and various speakers and activities.
According to Amity Womelsdorff, NE student development coordinator, any student can join a club. All it takes is registration through student activities, which can be done through myTCC under the clubs and committees tab. Those seeking to form a club must have at least five currently enrolled students, one full-time faculty or staff member to serve as an adviser and student activities’ approval.
The student activities offices organize various events on campus. These activities include time management seminars, conflict resolution seminars and leadership luncheons. Events are listed in the Names and Events calendar each week in The Collegian.
For instance, South Campus will offer a math anxiety workshop noon-1 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. Sept. 11 and noon-1 p.m. Sept. 22 in the Texas Room (SSTU 2210). The workshop is designed to give students tips from faculty on overcoming anxiety toward math and math testing, South senior office assistant Jasmine Tuya said.
New to the NE, NW, SE and South campuses this fall is the Student Leadership Academy. The goals of the academy are to incorporate leadership theories and practices of leadership for students interested in creating active and positive change in their community, Womelsdorff said.
NE and NW campus leadership programs are open entry, open exit.
“Students are encouraged to attend all of the scheduled events but do not have to,” said NW student development associate Rachel McCloskey. “They may attend any that fit their schedule.”
South will not start its program until mid-September with a selection of students for the fall but plan to make it available schoolwide in the spring, Tuya said. SE student development associate Amy Staley said the SE program encourages enrollment.
“We won’t turn people away from the workshops but would rather have students sign up and attend all of the workshops,” she said.
Some of the individual workshops offer a continuing education credit. Students should check with student activities to find out which workshops offer the credit and what requirements need to be met.
The leadership academy offers an in-depth look at leadership.
“Promoting self-awareness at the individual level, collaboration at the organizational level and action at the community level are essential to meeting our goals,” Womelsdorff said.
The student activities offices are also responsible for new student orientations and just helping students get around campus.
“We are the first people to call or stop in and see if you need a school map, directions to a class or building or need to find out how to contact someone at the campus,” said Tamika Smikles, TR senior office assistant.
TR Campus currently provides students with Fair Aid bus passes, free one-day passes for the Fort Worth City bus line, Smikles said.
