Students can visit the historic sights of Italy while earning credit in photography this spring.
For a total of 15 nights, the course offers “a terrific opportunity for students to see an amazing part of the world and earn three credits in the process,” said NE photography associate professor Patricia Richards, who teaches and coordinates the trip.
Italy, known for its architecture, visual art, literature and theater, should prove educational and fascinating, Richards said. Students will have an opportunity not only to visit but to explore many of the attractions the country has to offer.
Richards said the trip “allows students to see how the sea coast towns have used their position by the sea in the history of Italy,” a country where the water is as important to transportation as it is to survival. Many Italians live and eat off the water.
“In addition, the time in Florence will illuminate the birthplace of the Renaissance,” Richards said.
Students will depart from DFW Airport May 9 and return May 25. The price of the trip excluding airfare is $1,985.
Students will spend three nights in Trieste, two nights in Piran in southwestern Slovenia, two nights in Venice, two nights in the walled city of Lucca, three nights in Florence and three nights in Rome.
Breakfast will be included as well as five dinners and transportation by train to each location, entrance fees to the Uffizi Gallery and the Alinari National Museum of Photography in Florence, and a walking tour in Rome.
To sign up for the trip, those interested must go to business services and register for Express Photography (Photo II). Participants will pay tuition and a $500 nonrefundable deposit. Spaces are limited and filling up fast, Richards said. Non-TCC students can also enroll in the course.
Students may make payments between now and April 30 through business services.
A passport will be required for the students as well as their own digital or film camera. Students also must attend an information meeting at 1 p.m. March 30 in the photography digital teaching lab (NCAB 1209).
Students will be required to travel in twos. Assignments are given daily, and students will participate in critiques while on their trip.
After their return, photography students will display their work in an exhibit the following fall, and some photos will also be part of a calendar available for purchase.
