NE student government elections coming

Students interested in becoming a leader in NE’s student government association have until April 10 to apply.

Voting will take place at various tables set up across the campus April 17-19, current SGA president Annissa Mosher said. Students can also cast votes in the student activities office.

Those applying must have completed six semester hours and currently be enrolled in at least six hours with a minimum 2.0 GPA and will need 25 student signatures. Applications can be picked up in the NE student activities office, Mosher said.

“Also, you must be available for the entire upcoming school year because we only do elections once a year,” she said. “For specifics, students can look us up on Facebook, ask student activities or check the boards. We will have fliers.”

If elected, the association’s presidential responsibilities would include overseeing all activities, presiding over meetings and representing students during the campus president’s monthly council meetings, Mosher said.

“The vice president works closely with the president and often attends the President’s Council meetings as well,” she said. “This is a great position because it is very flexible, and in the past, vice presidents have taken the lead in campus promotion, fundraising — really anything they have a talent and interest in.”

The association’s secretary records official minutes and takes care of other documents while the treasurer is required to handle financial affairs and things pertaining to fundraising, Mosher said. The historian’s responsibilities include taking attendance and photos and producing fliers as well as a yearly scrapbook. The association’s historian also handles promotions, including social media, Mosher said. Other positions include parliamentarian, which is appointed, and two senator-at-large positions.

“They [senators] aren’t a part of the executive board, but they do have voting power in the forums,” she said. “The idea is that out of the 16,000-plus students we have on campus, relatively few are involved in clubs for various reasons. The senators at large represent these students.”

Mosher said she encourages NE students to vote in the upcoming election and make sure they are nominating someone who truly represents the students.

“The number of times we have been asked to speak for the student body is tremendous,” she said.

Elections are scheduled so incoming leaders have a chance to shadow current officers, Mosher said, and she is looking forward to getting to know them with hopes that the new group is as passionate and excited about SGA as the outgoing officers.

“I’m definitely excited to see the next generation of SGA leaders get started,” she said. “I can’t wait to see what they do.”
