NW students reflect during dedication

Veterans were honored by candlelight at a NW Campus dedication Nov. 11.

Cornerstone honor students wanted to carry on the tradition of celebrating Veterans Day. NW student Perla Chavez said last year the tradition stopped, and the students decided to get it started again. The entire dedication was student-led, and the speakers had ties to NW Campus.

NE students hear tale of WWI vet

Benny, a World War I veteran that Texas lawyer Jim Lane once defended, had been in every Veterans Day parade in his hometown since 1919.

But the 105-year-old veteran almost missed the parade that happened the same year he met Lane, who spoke during the NE Campus Luncheon Honoring Veterans last week.

SE Campus veterans share military experiences with students

SE Campus students and faculty celebrated freedom and paid homage to U.S. military servicemen and women on Veterans Day Nov. 11.

ROTC students form Arlington ISD marched their way to the stage. Veterans were right behind them, introducing themselves and stating their reasons for joining the military.

WINR speaker takes pride in program

Women in New Roles speaker Janine Lund discussed the most satisfying job of her entire career Nov. 12 at Billy Miner’s group room in downtown Fort Worth.

Lund, now a marriage and family therapist, began teaching for the WINR program five years ago. She said that although she was interested in teaching for WINR, she felt somewhat unworthy.

When Ernest Gines teaches, he asks his students what separates them from the competition.

“If you don’t have at least the basic skills, then you are not competitive,” he said. “You need to know how to take things apart and put them together. Know when it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Lucas Sawyer, vice president of Worthington National Bank, presented the Money Management seminar Nov.

10, offering advice on creating and staying on a budget and building and maintaining good credit as well as information on interest rates and investment options.

NE mental health program focuses on caregiver needs

When people think about how to deal with Alzheimer’s disease, they should consider not only the people who have the disease but also their caregivers, two experts told a NE Campus audience.

Dr. Kristin Martin-Cook, clinical research coordinator at UT Southwestern, and fellow speaker Shelly Young of the Alzheimer’s Association talked a great deal about caregivers when they spoke at the Alzheimer’s and Dementia seminar earlier this month.

South Campus students recently learned a positive way of dealing with end-of-semester stress — laughter.

South Campus student health services hosted Laughing Your Way Through Stress Nov. 4 to demonstrate the benefits of laughter.

Flo Stanton, South Campus health services coordinator, discussed the importance of good stress management. Along with different coping methods, Stanton emphasized laughter.

Coordinator shares final exam tips

With finals coming up at the beginning of next month, many students like freshman Colby Amato are already feeling the pressures of bringing in a few extra points to raise their grades.

“I’m super nervous about finals,” she said. “It’s my first year in college, so I don’t really know what to expect.”

Chris Carcerano, coordinator of the center for academic success on South Campus, shared some tips on how to start prepping for the upcoming weeks.

The Trinity River Campus writing and learning center is sponsoring the TCC Writes Holiday Laugh-Off competition, said Steven LeMons, TRC writing and learning center coordinator.

TR counselors say conflict not always bad news

Trinity River students learned that conflict is not always a bad thing during a Conflict Resolution seminar Nov. 2.

Counselors Lori Leach and Jeronimo Aviles offered techniques on how to cope with conflicts.

“It is one’s ability to manage the conflict that brings on the emotional stress,” Aviles said.
