With the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks Sunday, several TCC campuses will host events during the week in remembrance of the day.
The NE Campus English and art departments have collected an exhibit of artistic responses to 9/11.
The exhibit, organized by Dr. Ed Perez, is currently on display in College Hall and will continue until Sept. 16. It features original poetry, photography and works of art created by English and art faculty.
“We want students to participate, too,” Perez said. “We all remember it differently.”
In Excerpts of a Letter to My Brother, English instructor Mina Thompson displayed segments of a letter written to her brother on Sept. 20, 2001, recounting her feelings about the event.
Associate professor of photography Patricia Richards showed a black-and-white photograph of a mother and daughter looking out of a window with an American flag.
An interactive response wall asking “Where were you?” is included in the exhibit so students can post their own artistic responses to the event: photos, poems, drawings, flowers, etc. A handful of students have already posted essays describing their experiences on 9/11.
A brief observance ceremony and a moment of silence will be held in College Hall Sept. 7 at 8 a.m. and again at 6 p.m.
A remembrance ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 9 on NE Campus at the flagpole by the visitor’s parking lot located between the Administration Building and the Student Center.
Music will be provided by the NE music department.
That same day, students may gather in the TREC plaza at 8:30 a.m. for a remembrance walk in honor of the anniversary.
At 8:46, when the first tower of the World Trade Center was struck, students will begin walking to the main TR Campus. Original photos and news footage will be shown once students arrive.
NW Campus will host a 9/11 Memorial Run at 6 a.m. Sept. 9 at the FSTC fire tower.
Cadets from several agencies will run up and down the five-story tower 22 times for a total of 110 floors in memory of those who lost their lives.
On SE Campus, participants will assemble for a Steps of Remembrance walk at 8:46 a.m. in the Main Commons.
The walk up two flights of stairs will be in consideration of all who were affected by the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
