The NW student activities department and Laura Wood, NW history professor and sponsor of the NW Student Veterans Club, invited veterans to stop by the WTLO theater lobby Nov. 10 for a light snack and a cup of coffee.
They wanted to recognize campus vets on Veterans Day.
“We just want to shake hands and show appreciation for their service,” Wood said.
Tables were set up for those who wanted to sit and visit for a while.
Wood said it is important for veterans to have opportunities to talk with each other and share a bond.
“It’s not easy to talk with civilians about things they wouldn’t understand, but they can talk to each other because there’s trust,” she said. “They know another soldier would lay their life down for them.”
The NW Veterans Club is a virtual group with more than 70 members designed to offer communication venues that adapt to the busy lives of veterans.
The club also offers valuable resources, Wood said.
“We have members who want to meet in person on a more regular basis,” she said. “So we’ve set up a Veterans Lounge that will meet biweekly.”
Daniel White, who served five years in counterintelligence for the Army, stopped by for a cup of coffee.
He said that he’d like to meet with other veterans more often.
“A lot of vets don’t know about programs that are available to them,” he said. “Getting together is a way to connect and share information that can help.”
