The discovery center for academic success has designed a set of one-hour seminars for students and faculty on TR Campus as a new solution to lunchtime boredom.
The Lunchroom Workshop Series features faculty members and guest speakers giving brief seminars ranging from academic to personal issues.
Stevie Blakely, TR discovery center coordinator, said she has been a part of the project since last fall and enjoys what it represents about the school.
“They’re success workshops designed with students in mind,” she said. “They’re tips to help make life better.”
The presentations will include Time Management, Calming Test Anxiety, STDs, Test-Taking Strategies, Financial Aid, Successful Transferring and How to Read a Textbook, which Blakely will give Feb. 23.
Faculty, staff and guest speakers who volunteer discuss topics they know in the sessions. Past speakers have been from the library, financial aid and even outside companies.
In the end, Blakely believes students should use the opportunities that they are given to better themselves.
“Taking an hour out of your day that could help the rest of your life doesn’t seem like a waste of your time,” she said.
Bryan Ashmore and Josh West, who work in financial services at Regions Bank in Fort Worth, will present Successful Budgeting for Next Christmas Feb. 8.
The Lunchroom Workshop Series seminars are given once or twice a week for the rest of the semester with encores on Saturdays, noon-1 p.m. in TRTR Discover Room.
