In case of zombie invasion … learn to blend in

NE student Oliver Lukach taught a one-time special effects makeup class during his art period Sept. 25.

In a session open to all students, Lukach demonstrated how to professionally create a zombie look using face paint, fake blood and masks. He made fake blood with food coloring and gave students tips on what supplies were better or cheaper than others.

The full-time student started his career in special effects when he was invited as a student to work on the set of Risen, a horror film released in the United Kingdom. Lukach said he did so well the crew hired him as the head of special effects. Now, Lukach offers private lessons and charges a fee to do makeup for special events.

“It would be great if more people pursued it,” Lukach said about the special effects industry.

He said now the rise of CGI in movies is killing the industry.

“It’s kind of a dying breed,” he said. “Those movies don’t look as real as they did back when they did movies like Aliens.”
