Students can get educated on the teaching programs offered at TCC next week on South Campus.
The Teacher Education Expo will start at 11 a.m. and last until noon Thursday, March 13.
“It’s a great way to kick off spring break,” Altheria Gaston, instructor of education on South Campus, said.
The seminar will be held in the SSTU Living Room and is designed to be split into three portions.
The first 15 minutes will be hosted by Dr. Ernest L. Thomas, South Campus president.
For his portion, Thomas will present “Why Teaching?” He plans to highlight the importance of education.
Thomas said over the years he has become aware of the struggle to find good quality teachers, especially in urban areas.
With the curriculum offered at TCC, students interested in education will receive more experience in and understanding of the field, Thomas said.
“Education is a very rewarding career track,” he said. “[It] affords you the opportunity to help individuals expand their intellectual capabilities and their competency.”
Immediately following Thomas, Gaston will expand on the teaching programs offered at TCC. She will identify the courses students can take for teaching grades K-4 or 4-12.
“This is designed for any student who is an education major or who is even considering education,” she said, “who hope to earn their bachelor’s in teaching or teaching certification.”
Afterward, Yolanda Johnson, associate professor of business on South Campus, will speak to students about the Future Educators Association, a student organization forming at TCC.
Concluding the seminar, refreshments will be served and students can join the Future Educators Association.
Everyone with an interest in education—teaching, being teacher assistants or substituting—is encouraged to attend, Gaston said.
“It’s a great way to start a career in teaching,” she said.
