NW Campus, during a pre-spring break Lift-A-Thon, named David Evers and Tiffany Edwards as the men’s and women’s weightlifting champions.

Participants competed in four events including bench press, squats, deadlift and the farmer walk.

NW health and physical education instructor William Kaing helped organize similar events at Tarleton State and hopes the Lift-A-Thon will bring some exposure to the PE department.

“I’d like to get more people into the weight room and bring more notice to what the gym has to offer,” he said.

Kaing worked with the Bears weightlifting club to organize and plan the event, which drew 18 participants.

“We’re big time competitors, with each other and ourselves,” said NW student Jordan Bumgarner.

NW student Tia Demesticha said she was only interested in competing against herself.

“I’m just here to prove to myself how many reps I can do,” she said.

For Bears club president Chuck Grier, the event was less about competition and more about meeting personal goals.

“This isn’t really about losing weight or getting fit,” he said. “It’s about setting and accomplishing a goal and seeing what you can do.”
