Community to learn of education system

Efforts to help new generations and their parents understand the importance of education combine in iLearn … iWin … A Passport to Success, a conference next week on South Campus.

The community conference, organized by Fort Worth ISD, will present academic information for students and their parents Saturday, April 28, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Rotunda.

Juan Garcia, vice president for student development services on South Campus said the day is designed to inspire and empower parents to become involved and updated with the school system and to engage students and parents to a college-bound way of thinking.

Planners said they want to motivate attendees, including parents, to want an education and to pursue a college degree.

“ We are trying to develop a college-bound culture starting in K-12,” he said. “We find students succeed in college at higher rates if they attend experienced college preparation projects and programs.”

The conference will include information about costs for education, available programs and scholarships, contact information in schools of interest and steps in enrolling. Garcia said sessions will also tell people what to expect in the school system and inform them of their rights.

“ The iLearn … iWin conference will be a very beneficial event that will encourage parents and students to learn how to navigate the public school system and understand the college-bound mindset,” he said.

The program will include breakfast and lunch, a community and university exhibit show, a leadership and guidance workshop as well as giveaways and entertainment.
