NE Campus will hold a seminar next week dealing with the effects of military deployment on the family members and those deployed.
Military Deployment and Parental Injuries: Impact on Families will be 1-4 p.m. Feb. 5 in the NTSU Center Corner. A light lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m.
Dr. Terry Arata-Maiers from the San Antonio military Medical Center and Brooke Knox from the Mental Health Association of Tarrant County will discuss post-traumatic stress disorder.
Post-traumatic stress disorder and its effects can be more debilitating than physical injuries, said Dolores Sutter, NE mental health department chair.
“PTSD is one of the most debilitating disorders that our servicemen and women can face when they return home,” she said. “It’s not an injury that’s visible, but it’s there. The emotional injuries are more difficult to identify and assess.”
Sutter said her department co-chairs several seminars each semester to try to shed light on important subjects in the mental health field while benefiting professionals and students.
“Through our partnership with student activities, these seminars are now open to all students,” she said.
“We try to bring in well-known speakers and experts in the field.”
The seminar is open to all TCC students and mental health professionals, provided they pre-register. Pre-registration is on-going. Call 817-515-6190 to reserve a spot.
For all TCC students, there is no cost, but there is a $20 fee for mental health professionals.
