Springtime finds many TCC students scrambling to meet deadlines to make the smooth transition to a university, and South Campus is reworking its career center to accommodate a transfer center to help the process.
Scheduled to open in the career services center (SSTU 1102A), the transfer center will allow students to use its resources along with those of the career center without having to travel back and forth across campus.
Sandra Johnson, counselor and transfer liaison, said the center will help students compare schools and also set up appointments with recruiters from various universities.
Up-to-date information regarding changes in academic programs, scholarships and process information are advantages the transfer center will offer, Johnson said.
Texas Wesleyan, University of North Texas and Dallas Baptist University are among the universities whose representatives will visit the center on a regular basis to sit and talk with students.
These visits offer the students a good opportunity to network, Johnson said.
Johnson said by catering specifically to students and the schools they plan to attend, the transfer center will make students feel they are already at the university.
Replacing a table in the corner of the counseling and testing building, the new transfer center will provide students with both computer and human contact.
“The transfer center will serve a greater purpose by being in the new location,” Johnson said.
The new location will also help guide undecided students toward a career field and help them see what different schools have to offer.
The career center utilizes interest inventories and other sensitive instruments to help students pin down a major, she said.
Afterward, career center staff can help students see what people in their field of interest do, discover their salary, learn pros and cons the job carries and get feedback from people in the field.
“Choosing a career and a school to transfer to go hand in hand,” Johnson said.
