Fort Worth’s ‘Gooseneck’ center of talk
Author Jan Jones is coming to TR Campus Feb. 3 to speak about what she has learned researching William “Gooseneck” McDonald, Fort Worth’s first black millionaire.
Jones, a Fort Worth resident, has published a theatrical history of Fort Worth, and during her research on that topic, she became interested in McDonald.
“McDonald was a major forgotten figure in not only Fort Worth but in late 19th-early 20th century Texas politics and business,” Jones said. “He was a leading politician for over 40 years. He also opened the first successful African-American bank in Fort Worth.”
McDonald was an active member of the Republican Party for 30 years. He led the Black and Tan faction and was elected in 1892 to the State Republican Executive Committee.
“I thought it would be great for students to hear about William ‘Gooseneck’ McDonald,” government instructor Jinnell Killingsworth said. “I suspect many have not heard of him.”
Killingsworth, who invited Jones to TCC, said, “I have heard many good things about Jan Jones from the community.”
Jones will discuss these accomplishments along with other aspects of his life and legacy 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Feb. 3 in the TR Library.
After the discussion, audience members will have time to ask questions.
