Possible scam artists hit NE Campus

By Gary Collins/managing editor

The TCC police department has issued a warning to students about magazine sales people on NE Campus.

At approximately 5 p.m. Feb. 26, a student was approached between the NCAB and NFAB buildings and asked if she was interested in buying a magazine subscription.

The man approached by Cpl. Richard Dooling, TCC police, said he was selling magazine subscriptions for the Alliance Service Company Inc. of Rolling Meadow, Ill.

“When the female declined the offer, the male became rude, according to the student,” Dooling, said. “The man then made comments to the female saying she could afford it and made comments about her wedding ring.”

The woman’s husband then notified TCC police. Dooling later encountered another salesman in the Student Center outside the bookstore.

“To my understanding, there were several roaming the campus,” he said. “When I spoke to the bookstore clerks, they said the man had also made sexual comments to them.”

The men who said they were working to win points for scholarships have approached only women who were alone.

There have not been any physical incidents, but Sgt. Tony Woolum believes the magazine subscriptions might be a scam.

“There have been past incidents where students have given checks, credit cards even cash to people claiming to sell subscriptions,” he said.

“Whether [the sales are] legitimate or not, TCC has a no soliciting policy. They would also need to have a permit from the cities of Hurst and North Richland Hills because NE Campus is split between the two.”

The men encountered on NE Campus were college-aged looking in age and attire.

If students think they might have been cheated, Woolum advises they put a stop payment on checks or notify their banks.

If any students are approached by anyone who seems suspicious or tries to sell something, they should get a good description and notify TCC police at 817-515-8911.
