SE to hold body image forum

By Devin Simkins/reporter

Because people are often hard on themselves when it comes to their body image, SE Campus will offer help.

Jordan Irvin of The Elisa Project, which focuses on eating disorder prevention and giving support to the community, will present a Healthy Body Image seminar 9:35-10:30 a.m. Feb. 12 in the North Ballroom on SE Campus. Irvin will discuss eating disorders, negative body image and ways to overcome them.

Tangie Fields, SE special services coordinator, said the seminar is open to everyone.

“We would hope to be able to reach those students and even faculty and staff that have negative feelings about their bodies and would like to learn ways to improve the way they think and feel about their body image,” Fields said.

Aimee Howarth, the project’s program specialist, said Irvin is “very passionate about the work she does and making a difference in people’s lives.”

Irvin has a degree in psychology and hopes to attend graduate school.

The seminar will be mostly discussion-based with PowerPoint and time at the end for Q-and-A.

“We would like students to walk away with a feeling of empowerment and to recognize that there are healthy ways to make changes to one’s body,” Fields said.
